Fiji and Australia: Unlocking New Trade Horizons

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua emphasized that strengthening economic and trade cooperation is a primary focus of the Fiji-Australia Joint Forum, held by the Fiji-Australia and Australia Business Councils.

During the three-day Forum, Qereqeretabua noted it was an opportunity for government officials, business council members, investors, and trade representatives to strategize on enhancing collaboration in trade, tourism, and business relations between Fiji and Australia.

She pointed out that these Forums serve as a launchpad for economic cooperation by generating innovative strategies and solutions. Qereqeretabua recognized Australia as Fiji’s largest tourism source, key trading partner, diversified export hub, and a significant market for remittances with a strong investor presence.

Highlighting Fiji’s strategic position in the Pacific, she mentioned its access to emerging trade markets, particularly for agricultural exports, including taro, ginger, kava, mahogany, and coconut oil.

From August 2023 to January of this year, Fiji welcomed 15 investment projects from Australia in sectors such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT), renewable energy, and tourism, indicating the strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Qereqeretabua encouraged Forum delegates to work together on innovative solutions to tackle new business challenges and to seek adaptable economic recovery opportunities. She expressed gratitude to the Fiji-Australia and Australia Business Councils for organizing the Forum, which aims to build enduring partnerships for enhanced economic and trade relations.

The Forum also reflected upon the practical implementation of the renewed Vuvale Partnership, signed by Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in October of the previous year. This partnership prioritizes Fiji’s foreign policy objectives of sovereignty, security, and prosperity, fostering cooperation across sectors like infrastructure, economic growth, climate resilience, and cultural exchange.

This event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to deepen Fiji-Australia bilateral relations and strengthen the bonds of friendship through the renewed Vuvale Partnership.
