The Fiji Police Force (FPF) has signed a new agreement with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) designed to strengthen law enforcement collaboration across the Pacific region. This initiative includes the deployment of AFP strategic advisers who will collaborate closely with the FPF to enhance capabilities in areas such as intelligence gathering, human resources, and strategic operational planning.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw emphasized the significance of this agreement in the ongoing partnership between Fiji and Australia, noting that AFP personnel have served in Fiji as liaison officers and advisors for over twenty years. He expressed pride in this mutually beneficial relationship, which aims to bolster security within the Pacific.

FPF Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu described the agreement as “heralding a new dawn.” He underscored that the long-standing partnership is rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to combat transnational crime.

A key highlight of the agreement is the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence for operational field forensics in Fiji. This center aims to enhance the forensic capabilities of the Fiji Police through targeted training and support in crucial areas such as recruit training and specialized forensic techniques. The center represents a significant advancement in upgrading Fiji’s policing abilities, benefiting not only Fiji but also the greater Pacific region.

This collaboration aligns with previous discussions between Fijian Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua and Commissioner Kershaw regarding the integration of advanced technologies, like artificial intelligence, into policing and improving the infrastructure of the Fiji Police Force. This ongoing international support emphasizes a proactive approach to address challenges including organized crime and drug trafficking.

The partnership is poised to enhance safety for citizens and reinforce stability across the Pacific region. With dedicated support from Australia and the establishment of specialized training facilities, Fiji is increasingly equipped to develop its police capabilities effectively. This agreement signifies a hopeful step towards a future characterized by improved safety and collaborative efforts, demonstrating how unified actions can tackle shared security challenges and foster greater community trust and stability.
