Fiji is ramping up its efforts to combat transnational crime by strengthening its Vuvale Partnership with the Australian Federal Police (AFP). This move comes in response to growing security challenges in the region. Minister for Policing Iowane Naivalarua emphasized the effectiveness of this enhanced partnership, which includes training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations, yielding significant results in curbing drug trafficking and organized crime.
Naivalarua pointed to the AFP’s $400 million Pacific Policing Initiative as a critical investment, alongside the provision of essential operational assets like vehicles and forensic equipment. He noted that the collaboration has led to notable outcomes, such as drug seizures, arrests, and successful prosecutions linked to criminal networks. These efforts demonstrate a commitment not only to intercept drugs but also to dismantle the financial underpinnings of organized crime.
Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya stressed the importance of robust regional partnerships, particularly given Fiji’s geographic vulnerabilities with porous borders, urging for ongoing vigilance and collaborative responses to complex criminal activities. He highlighted that sharing information and resources with neighboring countries is crucial for effectively tackling escalating transnational crime.
Additionally, Naivalarua announced a landmark commitment from Australia to fund a new permanent Fiji Police Headquarters, addressing longstanding challenges related to infrastructure inadequacies.
