Fiji is making significant strides in enhancing its cybersecurity and digital transformation through a strengthened partnership with Australia. During a recent visit to Canberra, Tupou Baravilala, the Director-General for Digital Government Transformation, Cybersecurity, and Communications, engaged in fruitful discussions with Australian officials aimed at bolstering cooperation in areas like cyber resilience, connectivity, and critical technologies.
Baravilala underscored the vital role of regional partnerships in creating a secure and accessible digital landscape. By learning from its neighbors while sharing insights from its digital initiatives, Fiji is reinforcing its commitment to cybersecurity. Australian officials have shown a strong interest in Fiji’s experiences, signaling a readiness to engage in deeper collaborative efforts.
This visit is part of a broader strategy established under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cybersecurity Cooperation signed by Fiji and Australia in April of the previous year. Through this agreement, Australia is assisting Fiji in developing its National Cybersecurity Strategy and establishing its National Computer Emergency Response Team. Training related to cyber incident response is also being provided under the Cyber Regional Assistance for Pacific Incidents and Disasters program.
Fiji is set to commemorate the first anniversary of the MOU by hosting a review meeting in April, where senior officials will gather to assess progress and plan future initiatives to enhance cybersecurity. This meeting will focus on policy advancements, technical support, and potential new areas for cooperation, highlighting Fiji’s proactive approach to tackling increasing cyber threats.
In line with similar efforts, Fiji remains committed to strengthening its cybersecurity capabilities. The Cybercrime Act 2021 and its membership in the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime reflect the nation’s dedication to enhancing its legal and operational frameworks to address cyber threats. Additionally, initiatives such as skill-building workshops and regional partnerships demonstrate Fiji’s proactive stance in ensuring a secure digital future.
