Fiji and Australia: Strengthening Ties through IPEF

The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is expected to enhance the Vuvale partnership between Fiji and Australia, as both nations are participants in the emerging trade agreement. Tim Ayres, Australia’s Assistant Minister for Trade, expressed this sentiment during his address at the 2024 Fiji-Australia Joint Forum held in Suva. He highlighted the importance of international collaboration in light of “rising geopolitical tensions, conflict, and the looming threat of a global recession.”

Ayres noted that trade agreements such as the IPEF offer innovative solutions to these challenges, emphasizing areas such as supply chain resilience, clean energy transitions, digital trade, and anti-corruption measures. He praised Fiji’s involvement and leadership in the IPEF, underscoring its significance in the Indo-Pacific region.

The IPEF, launched by U.S. President Joe Biden in 2022, has Fiji as its only Pacific member. Ayres expressed enthusiasm for Fiji’s renewed interest in PACER-Plus, which he believes will enhance Fiji’s role in regional trade and economic cooperation.

He assured that Australia is prepared to assist Fiji in its decision-making processes and consultations and emphasized support for Fiji’s national development priorities through impactful investments in infrastructure. The Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific was highlighted as a key initiative, making substantial progress in transforming essential infrastructure.

Ayres concluded that the existing relationships between Australia, Fiji, and the Pacific—spanning government, business, and community connections—are strong and will continue to grow.
