The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is collaborating with the Australian Government’s Market Development Facility (MDF) to streamline regulations related to solar energy licensing and installation in Fiji. This initiative responds to the increasing demand for solar energy solutions within the country.

Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized that this partnership aims to simplify the regulatory processes and foster an environment conducive to investments in renewable energy, thus aiding households and businesses in transitioning to solar energy. This collaboration follows a market research study conducted by MDF and Solar Hub Fiji, which focused on urban demand for solar energy.

The research findings are promising: nearly 70% of surveyed households expressed a willingness to invest in solar energy systems using their own finances, while 50% were interested in loans or subscription models for acquiring such systems. Despite the enthusiasm, the survey also highlighted a significant barrier—existing regulatory frameworks need improvement to facilitate greater adoption of solar energy among both commercial and residential sectors.

The MDF Fiji Country Director, Kelera Cavuilati, noted that this partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing Fiji’s government priorities, particularly in achieving carbon emission reduction targets. Additionally, the influx of interest in solar power suggests a potential for growth in renewable energy investment, driving progress towards sustainability.

Fiji has already made notable progress in its renewable energy targets, achieving about 60% primarily through hydroelectric power. However, achieving a 100% renewable energy status by 2036 will require further investment, estimated at around $4 billion. The ongoing collaboration between FCCC and MDF represents a significant step forward in encouraging both private sector investment and the adoption of renewable technologies in Fiji.

This positive momentum in Fiji’s renewable energy sector suggests a promising future where solar energy could play a crucial role in meeting the country’s energy demands while supporting sustainable development.
