In a remarkable instance of regional solidarity, 129 personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) recently participated in a joint training exercise with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as part of the Vuvale Partnership. The training took place at Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland, emphasizing military cooperation and shared commitment to regional security.
During a visit to the training site, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka praised the professionalism and camaraderie displayed by the Fijian troops. “This training transcends tactical drills; it embodies our unity, loyalty, and dedication to the stability of our region,” he remarked. “The Vuvale Partnership is more than just a concept; it is actively strengthened through initiatives like these.”
The RFMF’s involvement comes as part of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, the largest combined military training exercise conducted by the ADF, featuring over 30,000 personnel from 19 allied nations, including significant partners such as the United States, New Zealand, Japan, and others. Notably, it marks a historic first for Fiji as part of a rotational company pilot—the first of its kind with any Pacific defense force—which aims to enhance interoperability and strengthen defense ties.
Prime Minister Rabuka and his delegation, which included senior military and government officials, had the opportunity to observe a live demonstration of offensive training tactics, highlighting the RFMF’s readiness for coalition operations. “This pilot program showcases the strength of our relationship and enables our forces to train and operate together with continuity and mutual trust,” Rabuka added.
Fiji’s participation in such large-scale exercises underscores its role as a pivotal security partner in the Indo-Pacific and a proactive advocate for regional preparedness. The deepening military partnership with Australia, alongside recent advancements in relationships with the United States and India, illustrates Fiji’s strategic approach to enhancing its defense capabilities and ensuring stability in the Pacific region.
This ongoing collaboration not only enhances the operational readiness of the RFMF but also contributes to broader peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, fostering a united effort in the face of evolving global security dynamics. Such initiatives provide an optimistic outlook for collective resilience and stability in the region, reinforcing the commitment to security and cooperation among nations.
