Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua highlighted that enhancing economic and trade collaboration is a key focus of the Fiji-Australia and Australia Business Councils Joint Forum.
The three-day event serves as a platform for government officials, members of the Fiji-Australia and Australia-Fiji Business Councils, business owners, investors, and trade representatives to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening ties in trade, tourism, and business relations between the two countries.
Qereqeretabua mentioned that such forums are crucial for fostering economic partnerships by initiating innovative strategies and solutions. She recognized Australia’s vital position as Fiji’s primary tourism source, key trade partner, and diverse export market, which also significantly contributes to remittances and investment opportunities.
She pointed out Fiji’s strategic location as a hub in the Pacific, providing access to emerging trade markets and highlighting the potential for agricultural exports, including taro, ginger, kava, mahogany, and coconut oil.
From August 2023 to January 2024, Fiji saw 15 investment projects from Australia primarily in sectors like Information and Communications Technology (ICT), renewable energy, and tourism, showcasing the strengthening economic relationship between the two nations.
Qereqeretabua urged delegates to work together on innovative solutions to tackle new business challenges and seize dynamic economic recovery opportunities. She expressed gratitude to the Fiji-Australia and Australia Business Councils for organizing the forum to strengthen economic and trade cooperation.
The forum also served to emphasize the practical implementation of the renewed Vuvale Partnership, which was signed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Australian Prime Minister Hon. Anthony Albanese in October of the previous year. This partnership centers on Fiji’s foreign policy priorities of sovereignty, security, and prosperity, while promoting cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, economic development, climate resilience, and cultural exchange.
This forum represents a significant advancement in the collaborative efforts of both nations to further develop Fiji-Australia bilateral relations and strengthen their friendship through the renewed Vuvale Partnership.
