The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has reaffirmed its commitment to the Fiji Police Force (FPF) with a new agreement designed to bolster law enforcement efforts, including enhancing information sharing and coordinating operations against transnational crime. This move continues a longstanding partnership focused on regional security challenges.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw announced that strategic advisors will be embedded within the FPF, providing support in areas such as intelligence gathering, human resources, and operational planning. A significant aspect of the agreement is the creation of a Regional Centre of Excellence for operational field forensics in Fiji, which will be established under the Pacific Policing Initiative. This center aims to enhance the FPF’s forensic capabilities through specialized training in advanced forensic techniques.

Kershaw highlighted the complexities facing law enforcement agencies in both countries and emphasized the importance of international partnerships in addressing these challenges. Similarly, Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu of the Fiji Police described the agreement as ushering in a new era of mutual respect and collaboration between traditional policing partners.

This partnership not only focuses on improving forensic training but also aligns with broader proactive security strategies that have been emphasized in previous discussions. It includes the integration of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence into policing practices. These efforts are part of a dedicated approach to enhance Fiji’s ability to tackle security threats, particularly organized crime and drug trafficking.

The continued partnership between the AFP and the FPF signals a promising outlook for greater safety in the Pacific region. It underscores the critical role of cooperation and shared expertise in overcoming shared challenges, ensuring that with Australia’s strong support, Fiji can further fortify its law enforcement capabilities and protect its citizens.
