The Australian High Commission in Tamavua hosted a significant event yesterday, marking a double celebration that underscored the strong relationship between Fiji and Australia. This occasion celebrated the successful conclusion of bilateral Defence Cooperation talks and bid farewell to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Women’s Rugby Team as they prepare for their upcoming campaign at the Defence Women’s World Cup in England.

Peter Roberts, the Australian High Commissioner, highlighted the day’s importance by referring to it as a “celebration of strong ties and shared values” between the two countries. In alignment with this sentiment, Commodore Humphry Tawake, Deputy Commander of the RFMF, emphasized the potential of rugby in fostering unity, stating that the sport builds connections that go beyond just the game.

Supporting this unity, the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) also contributed by sponsoring the team’s playing jerseys, illustrating a broader collaboration within the Pacific region. The women’s rugby team is set to depart next week for the tournament scheduled from August 22 to September 27, 2025.

This celebration signifies not only a significant diplomatic achievement between Fiji and Australia but also the growing recognition of women’s sports in the region. Such events encourages community engagement and pride, suggesting a hopeful future for women’s rugby in Fiji and a solidifying bond among Pacific nations.

The farewell to the RFMF Women’s Rugby Team as they head to the World Cup is a reminder of the positive impact that sports diplomacy can have on international relations. It presents an opportunity not just for competition but for cultural exchange and communal support, ultimately fostering a closer-knit Pacific community.
