Fiji Ambassadors Appointments Spark Call for Gender Balance in Diplomacy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Fiji’s recent appointments of ambassadors were made after an open recruitment process, noting that no women applied during the latest round. “Applications are open to everyone,” Rabuka stated. He addressed concerns raised by the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) regarding women’s representation in Fiji’s diplomatic service.

In response, GCC chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s announcement of new diplomatic postings to countries including Israel, Japan, and Geneva. He acknowledged the importance of these appointments in reinforcing Fiji’s international relationships while also highlighting the critical need for gender balance in leadership roles.

The GCC underscored that as Fiji continues to uphold commitments to gender equality, particularly through the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), equitable consideration for women in leadership positions must remain a priority. “Women’s leadership brings valuable perspectives and strengthens our collective national voice on the global stage,” the statement read.

The council encouraged ongoing efforts by the government to ensure women receive equal opportunities in these significant positions, aligning with Fiji’s overarching goals of inclusivity and progress. Ratu Viliame reaffirmed the council’s support for initiatives that foster women’s advancement in leadership, aiming for a comprehensive representation of all Fijians in nation-building endeavors.

This dialogue reflects a broader commitment in Fiji to enhance women’s political participation and improve representation across various sectors. Continued advocacy for reforms such as mentorship programs and policy initiatives highlights the potential for Fiji to shift towards a more equitable governance structure. With collaborative efforts aimed at dismantling barriers and fostering an inclusive environment, there is hope that more women will actively shape policies that reflect the needs and voices of their communities.
