Fiji Amateur Boxing is gearing up for an exciting and dynamic year, focusing on the growth and performance of its athletes. Coach Cameron Todd has unveiled a detailed competition schedule, beginning with events on February 14 and 28, vital for finalizing the selection of the Commonwealth team. Many boxers will be vying for a coveted spot on the team during these competitions.
In an ambitious move, Fiji plans to send a select group of athletes to Thailand in March to participate in the under-19 Futures event. This tournament acts as a qualifying platform for the Youth Olympics, set to take place in November, and funding has already been secured to support the participation of Fijian boxers.
April will see Fiji Amateur Boxing host a two-day competition in collaboration with Samoa and New Zealand, potentially at the FMF Gymnasium, which is being considered as the venue for this significant event. Todd noted, “It will be a very busy year for Fiji Amateur Boxing; we will be forming a squad of prospective boxers for the Pacific Games next year in Tahiti, which will serve as a qualifying event for the 2028 Olympics.”
Reflecting on the previous year, Todd shared insights into a busy schedule that included a notable performance at an international event in Colorado, where one boxer finished in fifth place. The Tri-nations competition held at FMF Gymnasium also yielded positive results against competitors from Australia and Samoa. Furthermore, Fijian boxers shone at the Australian Golden Gloves, securing several gold and silver medals.
The overarching aim for this year is to maintain the momentum and improve the performance of national representatives. Transitioning from junior boxers to competitors in the Commonwealth Games is a lengthy journey, and there is a strong focus on providing young athletes with significant exposure to develop their skills and understanding of the sport.
Fiji Amateur Boxing extends its gratitude to all boxers for their dedication and contributions to the sport. There is palpable optimism for the future, with a commitment to achieving greater success in 2026 and beyond.
