Fiji Airways’ Turmeric Triumph Amid Cargo Revenue Challenges

Fiji Airways reported a revenue of $99 million from cargo in 2023, with its most significant agricultural export being turmeric, which was flown to North America at a rate of 100 tonnes per week. This information was included in the airline’s annual report, presented in Parliament on Friday.

However, the company’s cargo revenue experienced a decline of 24 percent, attributed to lower yields amid increasing competition as airlines resumed international operations following the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the annual report, Fiji Airways transported over 29,000 tonnes of cargo to and from the Fijian islands. The airline emphasized that its cargo services are crucial for enhancing the nation’s economy by facilitating trade and commerce.

Fiji Airways manages shipments from several regions, including Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and the Pacific Islands. The airline stated that its cargo operations support local businesses and play a significant role in promoting economic growth in Fiji.
