Fiji Airways to Transform Island Travel with Innovative VTOL Aircraft

Fiji Airways is set to enhance inter-island air travel in Fiji through a new partnership with American aviation company Odys’ Aviation, known for its innovative air travel solutions. The collaboration will introduce Odys’ Aviation’s hybrid VTOL aircraft, called ‘Laila,’ beginning early next year, making Fiji the first country in the Pacific to utilize this technology.

During a presentation at the recently concluded Fiji Tourism Convention 2024 in Denarau, Fiji Airways CEO Andre Viljoen highlighted that this initiative is part of the airline’s “nine game changer strategy,” aimed at transforming travel to Fiji’s maritime and outlying islands. He explained that the hybrid VTOL aircraft can perform vertical take-offs and landings, addressing the challenges faced by many islands in Fiji that lack airport runways.

Viljoen detailed the two versions of the aircraft: a smaller cargo variant that operates similarly to a drone and can carry up to 100 kilograms, with a range of 400 miles, ideal for delivering supplies to remote islands. The larger model accommodates nine passengers and includes two pilots, which Viljoen sees as a significant advantage. The aircraft’s unique capability to take off and land directly at hotels adds to its appeal. Fiji Airways is enthusiastic about being the launch partner with Odys’ Aviation.
