Fiji Airways has resumed commercial passenger flights to Port Vila in Vanuatu, an important step for both travel and relief efforts in the region. The first flight, designated FJ2265, took off from Nadi at 11:59 AM and landed in Port Vila just after the airport reopened for commercial operations at 1:00 PM.
The flight carried 98 passengers, including a team from the Fiji Government’s relief operation, returning nationals and residents of Vanuatu, as well as aid workers. In addition, the plane was loaded with essential assistance goods, underscoring the dual purpose of the flight – facilitating travel and delivering much-needed aid.
Moreover, the return flight FJ2264 marked the first commercial departure from Port Vila since the airport’s closure following an earthquake on December 17. It was intended to reunite disrupted travelers, particularly Vanuatu nationals and residents hoping to return home.
Fiji Airways plans to restart its regular flight schedule with services FJ263/262 later this afternoon, corresponding with the airport’s operating hours of 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Additional flights are slated for tomorrow, indicating a commitment to restoring travel connectivity for the region.
This resumption of flights not only supports essential travel but also symbolizes hope and recovery for communities impacted by the recent earthquake. As travel and aid logistics normalize, it heralds a brighter future for both Vanuatu and Fiji, reinforcing the ties between the nations in times of need.
