Fiji Airways has advanced its commitment to sustainable aviation by signing an expression of interest with Odys Aviation for its innovative hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The Odys Aviation ‘Laila’ aircraft is designed for various configurations focused on cargo transport and boasts a range of 400 miles, enabling connections between Fiji’s 330 islands.
This initiative is expected to provide a low-carbon air cargo solution for routes throughout the South Pacific and will facilitate new emergency medical routes that have previously been hindered by infrastructure issues. Additionally, operating the ‘Laila’ aircraft will allow Fiji Airways to broaden its commercial activities and forge contracts with logistics firms and government agencies in support of non-governmental organization (NGO) operations across the region.
Andre Viljoen, managing director and CEO of Fiji Airways, emphasized that the hybrid VTOL aircraft aligns perfectly with the airline’s dedication to sustainable aviation. He expressed optimism about the partnership with Odys Aviation, stating it would bolster Fiji Airways’ efforts to reduce aviation emissions and establish a roadmap for future travel.
“This partnership will do more than just expand Fiji Airways’ commercial operations for today; it will drive our investment in the future of travel and lifestyle for the people of Fiji as well,” Mr. Viljoen noted.
James Dorris, CEO and Co-Founder of Odys Aviation, highlighted the company’s philosophy of collaborating with customers and local regions to deliver additional value beyond just the aircraft. He expressed excitement about the expression of interest as a starting point for collaboration with Fiji Airways, local authorities, and the people of Fiji, aiming to advance sustainable aviation and enhance regional connectivity.
Pilot programs utilizing the aircraft are projected to begin in 2025.
