Fiji Airways Soars High with Bold Sustainability Moves

Fiji Airways has announced a significant reduction in its carbon footprint by limiting portable water uplift on long-haul flights to 50% capacity and 25% for medium-haul flights. This information was disclosed in the airline’s 2023 annual report, which was recently presented in Parliament.

The airline operates a fleet that includes four Airbus A350-900 aircraft and five Boeing 737 Max 8, both known for their fuel efficiency. The report highlights the adoption of new generation aircraft technology aimed at cutting emissions. Additionally, the integration of SkyBreathe software has enhanced the transparency of fuel consumption reporting and carbon dioxide emissions.

Fiji Airways has also partnered with the Department of Forestry’s ‘Every take-off, One tree’ initiative, successfully planting over 75,000 mangroves along Fiji’s scenic coastlines.

The airline is taking steps to minimize plastic use by transitioning to sustainable packaging for its amenity kits, incorporating paper and wood-based materials. This change is expected to eliminate millions of single-use plastic items from its supply chain gradually.

Moreover, Fiji Airways has implemented an office waste recycling program that categorizes waste into four streams, with three being recycled. This initiative has led to a 25% diversion of office waste from landfills, with expectations for further improvement.
