Fiji Airways has officially resumed commercial passenger flights to Port Vila, Vanuatu, marking a significant step in the recovery process following the recent earthquake. The inaugural flight, FJ2265, utilizing a Boeing 737 Max8, departed from Nadi at 11:59 and safely landed in Port Vila at 13:04, just minutes after the airport reopened its doors to commercial air travel at 13:00.

Onboard this important flight were 98 passengers including a relief team from the Fiji Government, Vanuatu nationals and residents returning home, as well as aid workers. The aircraft also carried essential assistance goods. Additionally, a ground team from Fiji Airways was present to service the aircraft and prepare it for its return to Nadi.

Notably, FJ2265 was the first commercial flight to touch down in Port Vila since the airport’s closure. The return flight, FJ2264, followed shortly after, facilitating the journey for Fijian nationals and residents, as well as other passengers who had their plans disrupted due to the closure caused by the earthquake on December 17.

The regular flight service is set to return to its usual schedule with flights FJ263/262 resuming this afternoon, operating within the new hours established at the airport of 13:00 to 18:00. Additional services are also planned for tomorrow.

This resumption of flights not only allows for the transportation of passengers but also signifies hope for stability and recovery for the affected communities in Vanuatu. The collaboration between Fiji Airways and relief organizations exemplifies solidarity in the face of adversity, ensuring that both aid and support can flow into the region as it starts to rebuild.
