Fiji Airways has officially resumed its commercial passenger flights to Port Vila, Vanuatu, following the airport’s reopening. The supplementary flight FJ2265, operated by a Boeing 737 Max8, took off from Nadi at 11:59 AM and landed in Port Vila at 1:04 PM, just minutes after the airport opened for commercial operations at 1:00 PM.
The flight carried 98 passengers, including a Fiji Government relief team, returning Vanuatu nationals and residents, as well as aid workers. Alongside the passengers, the aircraft transported essential assistance goods. A ground team from Fiji Airways was also onboard to service the aircraft and prepare it for its return trip.
FJ2265 marked the first commercial flight to arrive in Port Vila after its reopening. In addition, the return flight FJ2264 was the first to depart and included Fiji nationals and residents returning home, as well as other guests affected by the airport’s closure following the earthquake that struck on December 17.
Fiji Airways plans to resume its regular flight schedule with services FJ263/262 in the afternoon, aligning with the airport’s current operating hours from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Additional flights are set to operate the following day, allowing for continuous travel and support to the region.
This reopening signifies a positive step toward recovery for both Vanuatu and Fiji, providing much-needed assistance and connectivity for the communities affected by recent events.
In summary, Fiji Airways’ resumption of flights to Port Vila not only supports the movement of aid and relief efforts but also strengthens the bond between the two nations as they work collaboratively towards recovery and normalization after the earthquake.
