Fiji Airways is set to enhance inter-island air travel in Fiji by partnering with American company Odys’ Aviation, which specializes in advanced aviation technology. Their hybrid VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, known as the ‘Laila,’ is expected to begin operations in early 2024, making Fiji the first nation in the Pacific to utilize this type of aircraft.
André Viljoen, the CEO of Fiji Airways, stated that this initiative is part of the airline’s “nine game changer strategy” aimed at transforming travel to Fiji’s outer islands. During a presentation at the Fiji Tourism Convention 2024 in Denarau, he explained that the hybrid VTOL aircraft can take off and land vertically, providing significant advantages for accessibility to islands without traditional runways.
Viljoen noted that there are two variants of the aircraft: a smaller cargo version, which operates similarly to a drone and can carry up to 100 kilograms with a range of 400 miles, will facilitate cargo deliveries to remote islands. The larger version is a nine-seater passenger aircraft, operated by two pilots. Its ability to take off and land at locations such as hotels is a substantial benefit, making travel more convenient for guests.
Fiji Airways is thrilled to be the launch partner for Odys’ Aviation, marking a new era in air travel for the islands.
