National carrier Fiji Airways plans to launch direct flights to Shanghai, China, fulfilling a commitment made by Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka by the end of this year. During the annual Fiji Tourism Exchange held in Nadi, Gavoka revealed that negotiations are progressing well at a government-to-government level, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka engaging in talks with his Chinese counterpart.

Gavoka expressed the importance of direct air services to the Chinese mainland, emphasizing that while Hong Kong has served as a viable destination, Shanghai is now the primary focus for Fiji Airways. The Chinese government has consented to Shanghai as the point of direct service, marking a significant milestone in the discussions.

Fiji Airways currently operates flights to Hong Kong, a route that has proven to be financially successful. However, the anticipated direct connection to Shanghai is expected to significantly enhance tourism and business ties between the two nations. In January 2025, only a small fraction of visitors to Fiji came from China, indicating a strong demand that could be met through direct flights.

Gavoka’s address was bolstered by comments from the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, who has previously highlighted the economic potential of direct flights. Zhou noted that the absence of such connections has limited Fiji’s attractiveness to Chinese tourists, who currently face cumbersome travel options. Enhancing direct connectivity would not only facilitate tourism but also open up avenues for trade and investment, benefiting both countries.

In addition, Fiji Airways has been reviewing its code-sharing arrangements, specifically with Air India, amid efforts to ensure fair competitiveness in the market. This aligns with the minister’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with India, a key destination within Fiji’s tourism strategy.

As these discussions advance, there is a growing sense of optimism that the establishment of direct flights will unlock new opportunities for cultural exchange, tourism growth, and economic collaboration between Fiji and China. Both nations stand to gain significantly from the enhanced connectivity, fostering mutual prosperity and deeper bilateral relations.
