Fiji Airways has successfully completed its first commercial flight to Port Vila since the earthquake on December 17, transporting 98 passengers, which included a Fiji Government relief team, returning Vanuatu nationals and residents, and aid workers. The flight, designated FJ2265, utilized a Boeing 737 Max8F and landed at the airport on the afternoon of its reopening at 1:00 PM.
Expressing pride in this achievement, Fiji Airways noted, “We are proud that FJ2265 was the first commercial service to arrive at Port Vila on its reopening.” The return flight, FJ2264, also marked a significant event as it was the first commercial departure from Port Vila, taking back Fiji nationals and residents affected by the airport’s previous closure.
In addition to this milestone, Fiji Airways resumed its normal flight schedule with flights FJ263 and FJ262 starting that same afternoon, departing at 1:00 PM and returning at 4:00 PM.
This resumption of air travel is a positive step towards recovery for the affected communities, allowing for the transportation of aid and the reuniting of families displaced by the earthquake. It highlights Fiji Airways’ commitment to supporting relief efforts and restoring connectivity in the region after a natural disaster.
