Fiji Airways successfully resumed its operations to Port Vila today, transporting 98 passengers on flight FJ2265. This flight included a Fiji Government relief team, returning Vanuatu nationals and residents, as well as aid workers. This marks a significant moment as it is the first commercial flight to arrive in Port Vila following the reopening of the airport after the earthquake that struck on December 17.
Flight FJ2265, utilizing a Boeing 737 Max8F, landed in Port Vila at 1:00 PM, celebrating its role in reconnecting the region. “We are proud that FJ2265 was the first commercial service to arrive at Port Vila on its reopening,” remarked Fiji Airways. The return flight, FJ2264, also made history as the first commercial departure, carrying back those Fiji nationals and residents whose journeys were interrupted by the airport’s closure.
Additionally, Fiji Airways has reinstated its regular schedule with flights FJ263/262, which operated this afternoon, enhancing connectivity for travelers.
This marks a crucial step toward recovery for Vanuatu, demonstrating the resilience and support of the region’s community and international partners. It is a hopeful sign of normalization following the challenges posed by the earthquake, allowing for a return to regular travel and the ongoing assistance needed for disaster recovery efforts.
