Fiji Airways has launched a new route connecting Nadi to Dallas, significantly enhancing travel options for North American tourists, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Prof Biman Prasad. During the route’s inauguration in Nadi this week, he highlighted the importance of tourism to Fiji’s economy, noting that improved connectivity with the United States is expected to provide a major economic boost.
Prof Prasad pointed out that in 2023, tourism accounted for 40 percent of Fiji’s economic growth and represented over 36 percent of employment in the country. He emphasized the crucial role of Fiji Airways in the tourism sector, revealing that the airline is responsible for transporting 70 percent of all visitors to Fiji’s islands. There was a noticeable increase in visitor numbers from June 2023 to June 2024, with 2023 arrivals nearing one million and exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104 percent.
The new Nadi-Dallas route enhances Fiji’s status as a desirable destination in the South Pacific, showcasing the islands’ natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. Prof Prasad expressed that this route not only promotes tourism but also encourages trade and business ties between Fiji and the United States. Improved connectivity will enable Fijian businesses to tap into new markets, facilitating exports and partnerships with American companies, which will ultimately contribute to a more resilient and diversified economy.
He concluded by acknowledging Fiji Airways’ commitment to delivering award-winning service and improving Fiji’s global connectivity.
