Fiji Airways Invests Big in Fuel: What’s Driving the Surge?

Fiji Airways reported spending $504 million on fuel in 2023, marking a 34 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the airline’s annual report presented in Parliament on Friday. The airline attributed this rise to greater fuel consumption driven by increased flight activity, lower fuel prices, and a robust U.S. dollar.

On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways welcomed its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which completed its delivery flight from Singapore to Nadi using a blend of 30-40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), resulting in a carbon savings of approximately 46,768 kilograms. The airline expressed pride in this milestone.

Throughout the remainder of 2023, each flight from Singapore to Nadi has incorporated a smaller SAF ratio of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways emphasized that utilizing sustainable fuels enables airlines to play a vital role in combating climate change.

In 2023, Fiji Airways also initiated various environmental initiatives, including planting a tree for every takeoff and landing, minimizing single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling efforts. The airline highlighted its dedication to sustainability in response to the growing demand from environmentally conscious travelers.
