Beyond the headline

Fiji Airways has added BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to its ground operations fleet, the national carrier announced on October 31, 2023, marking the latest step in its push to reduce fuel use and emissions across daily operations. The airline said the vehicles — capable of operating in pure electric mode for up to 100 kilometres — will be deployed across airside duties where short trips and frequent stop-start driving are common.

Managing director and chief executive Paul Scurrah described the fleet renewal as part of Fiji Airways’ “ongoing commitment to responsible growth.” “As Fiji’s national airline, we recognise the important role we play in protecting our environment for future generations,” Scurrah said, adding that the new vehicles help the carrier “operate more sustainably while continuing to deliver safe, reliable, and world-class service.”

Fiji Airways said the BYD Shark 6 units combine performance with lower emissions and are particularly well suited to tasks such as shuttling engineering teams between aircraft stands, hangars and operational areas. The carrier highlighted the vehicles’ reliability and efficiency in supporting fast-paced airside maintenance routines while reducing the fuel consumption associated with conventional internal combustion vehicles.

Beyond operational duties, the vehicles will be used in training at the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy, allowing students and staff to gain hands-on experience with hybrid electric technology as the aviation industry transitions to lower-emission mobility solutions. The airline also said it will prioritise the adoption of plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles where suitable models are available in Fiji, with conventional fossil-fuel vehicles to be progressively phased out as the fleet is renewed.

The introduction of the BYD plug-in hybrids is the newest measure in Fiji Airways’ sustainability programme, which positions environmental stewardship as a core part of its operations and customer experience. While the announcement focuses on ground operations rather than aircraft emissions, the move aligns with wider industry efforts to lower the carbon footprint of airport ground support equipment and fleet vehicles.

Fiji Airways did not provide estimates of anticipated fuel savings or emissions reductions in its announcement, nor a timeline for further electrification of its ground fleet. Still, the deployment of vehicles with a 100-kilometre electric range signals a practical, incremental approach to cutting operational emissions while maintaining service continuity at Fiji’s airports.
