The national airline, Fiji Airways, has reinforced its quality control protocols following the discovery of an empty bullet casing on one of its flights earlier this year. Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka announced in Parliament that these enhanced measures are particularly focused on international departure points to ensure the safety and security of all passengers.
The incident, which occurred on April 7, 2025, involved the casing being found in an overhead compartment during a routine security check prior to a flight’s continuation to Los Angeles. It raised concerns about aviation security, prompting investigations that are still ongoing to determine how the casing came to be on the aircraft.
Despite the unsettling nature of the incident, Minister Gavoka reassured the public that air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation globally.
