Fiji Airways Adopts Temporary Measures Amid Fleet Challenges

Fiji Airways has implemented temporary measures to ensure the continuity of its operations. According to civil aviation authorities, these measures are acceptable as long as they align with the airline’s approved procedures. This initiative is crucial for ensuring the safety and airworthiness of the involved aircraft, as stated by Theresa O’Boyle-Levestam, the chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji.

The airline recently deployed B737 Max aircraft for its morning flights between Nadi and Nausori, replacing two ATR72 planes. Insiders revealed that one ATR72 was grounded due to maintenance issues, prompting the use of parts from an ATR42 to keep it operational. Unfortunately, this process has resulted in the ATR42 becoming inoperable.

The second ATR72 has been dedicated to flights servicing Vavau, Tonga, responding to increased demand from passengers interested in whale-watching excursions. In light of these challenges, Fiji Airways aims to acquire two new ATR72 aircraft to bolster its fleet and phase out the ATR42.

The Civil Aviation Authority is aware of these fleet enhancement plans and is working diligently with Fiji Airways to ensure that the new aircraft adhere to regulatory standards and are promptly registered. While the regulatory authority oversees maintenance programs and conducts regular inspections, it does not engage in day-to-day operational decisions, such as the redistribution of aircraft parts.

O’Boyle-Levestam emphasized that operational decisions must comply with approved maintenance procedures. The airline’s ability to adapt its fleet management to maintain service coverage despite limitations showcases its commitment to meeting passenger needs.

In summary, while Fiji Airways faces operational challenges, its proactive approach, alongside the support from civil aviation authorities, highlights a resilience that bodes well for future operations. The planned addition of new aircraft reflects a hopeful outlook for enhancing the overall travel experience for its passengers.
