Fiji Airways has implemented temporary measures to ensure the continuity of its operations, according to civil aviation authorities. These measures are deemed acceptable as long as they align with the airline’s approved procedures, which are crucial for maintaining the safety and airworthiness of the involved aircraft. Theresa O’Boyle-Levestam, chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji, emphasized the importance of adhering to established protocols.
The airline’s recent adjustments include the deployment of B737 Max aircraft for morning flights on the Nadi-Nausori-Nadi route, replacing two ATR72 planes. Sources suggest that one ATR72 is currently out of service, and parts from an ATR42 were utilized to keep the other ATR72 operational. However, this has resulted in the ATR42 being grounded.
For flights to Vavau, Tonga—where there is significant passenger interest due to whale watching—the second ATR72 is still in use. To address the current limitations in the fleet, Fiji Airways plans to acquire two additional ATR72 planes and phase out the ATR42 model.
The Civil Aviation Authority is actively monitoring the situation and is in collaboration with Fiji Airways to ensure that all new aircraft meet regulatory standards and are registered promptly on the Fiji aircraft register. Ms. O’Boyle-Levestam clarified that while the CAAF does not influence operational decisions, it remains responsible for overseeing maintenance programs and ensuring compliance with international safety norms.
