Fiji Airways reported spending $504 million on fuel in 2023, reflecting a 34 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the company’s annual report presented in Parliament. The airline attributed this rise to greater fuel consumption resulting from increased flight operations, a drop in fuel prices, and a strengthened US dollar.
On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways welcomed its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The delivery flight from Singapore to Nadi utilized a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend comprising 30-40 percent, resulting in a carbon reduction of approximately 46,768 kg (47 tons). The airline expressed pride in what they termed a historic flight.
Throughout the remainder of 2023, all flights from Singapore to Nadi incorporated a small SAF component of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways underscored that by utilizing sustainable fuels, airlines can play a pivotal role in combating climate change.
Additionally, Fiji Airways initiated various programs in 2023 to minimize its environmental footprint. These efforts include planting one tree for every take-off and landing, reducing single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling procedures. The airline emphasized that its dedication to sustainability aligns with the increasing expectations of environmentally aware travelers.
