Fiji Airports Takes Off Towards Sustainability with Solar Farm Initiative

Fiji Airports has officially entered into a contract with ITP Renewables Australia to commence the first phase of the solar farm project at Nadi International Airport.

Mesake Nawari, the Chief Executive of Fiji Airports, stated that the contract represents a significant advancement for the solar farm initiative. He noted, “The agreement includes consultancy services, allowing ITP to begin designing the Solar Farm for Nadi International Airport. As we move forward with the design, we recognize the substantial expenditure associated with energy, and our goal is to lead the aviation sector in Fiji and the region.”

Nawari expressed that this contract marks the first step toward realizing the vision of generating an initial 3.5 megawatts of clean energy on-site through the solar farm. He added that this initiative will enhance Fiji Airports’ alignment with the Airport Council International’s Green Airport initiative, putting it on par with leading international airports and serving as a significant accomplishment for the organization.

The development of the solar farm is part of Fiji Airports’ broader commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and promoting environmental sustainability. “We can confidently state that the solar farm is now a reality rather than a mere concept. Our dedication to achieving a net zero carbon footprint positions us as a pioneering airport in the global movement toward zero carbon emissions,” Nawari stated.

He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with ITP Renewables Australia, highlighting their expertise in renewable energy consulting services across Australia and Oceania, including areas such as engineering, strategy and compliance, and energy sector analytics in the aviation industry.
