Fiji Airports now boasts the largest electric vehicle fleet in the region with the recent addition of nine vehicles to its existing fleet of 13. This expansion underscores the organization’s commitment to transitioning to electric mobility, particularly in the aviation sector, which is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions.
Chief Executive of Fiji Airports, Mesake Nawari, emphasized the global shift towards electric mobility and the importance of reducing the organization’s carbon footprint. He noted that while the goal is to ultimately utilize 100 percent renewable energy, the current transitions mark a promising beginning. Plans are also underway to set up a solar farm to progressively incorporate more clean energy in their operations.
“This is a significant step for Fiji Airports towards reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the green spaces within our airport,” Nawari stated. The airport management recently handed keys for the new Volkswagen electric vehicles to nine managers during a Fiji Day celebration in Nadi.
With this purchase, Fiji Airports has established itself as a leader in the decarbonization of the transport sector within the region. Nawari added, “Fiji Airports is committed to sustainably driving our Green Airport initiatives to continuously implement environmentally beneficial activities. We have introduced several initiatives and will continue to expand our efforts.”
The organization aims to significantly lower carbon emissions, thereby fostering a cleaner environment that benefits both the airport and its surroundings. Palas Auto Services, the local distributor of the electric vehicles, mentioned that while the adoption of new technology can face challenges, electric vehicles represent a pivotal change for the automotive industry and align with the “Green Initiatives” promoted by the Fijian Government.
By choosing BYD, a global leader in new energy vehicles and the third largest automotive brand worldwide, Fiji Airports aligns itself with the largest EV manufacturer globally. The acquisition of electric vehicles is part of Fiji Airports’ strategic objectives, which include sustainability initiatives such as transitioning to solar power, waste management and recycling, reducing plastic usage, and engaging in tree and mangrove planting, among other eco-friendly practices.
