Fiji Airports contributes approximately $20 million in profit share to the government, as highlighted by Iliesa Vanawalu, chairperson of the Social Affairs Committee, during a recent update to Parliament regarding the company’s 2021 Annual Report. Vanawalu noted that this substantial profit share is a result of Fiji Airports’ ongoing positive growth following the global pandemic.

He mentioned that the Nadi Airport master plan aims to enhance services with other aviation and tourism-focused operators, which is expected to drive further growth. Vanawalu emphasized, “All of these developments bode well for an institution that generates a significant amount of revenue for the State,” explaining that, on average, $20 million has been returned to the government.

He pointed out that strict COVID-related protocols were implemented at the airport and continued to be monitored effectively. Additionally, he mentioned that the airport’s focus on energy-saving measures has greatly contributed to its sustainability efforts. The company has successfully reduced its monthly utility expenses through an energy conservation initiative.

Vanawalu also noted that Fiji Airways is now able to operate its 737 aircraft from Nausori Airport, which significantly enhances service capabilities. He highlighted the importance of a green initiative being pursued, with plans for attaining a higher level of accreditation by 2024, and acknowledged that necessary upgrades at Fiji Airports Limited are currently being evaluated.

Commending the company for its commitment to improving services and upgrading its 15 airport facilities nationwide, Vanawalu remarked that modern improvements are underway in the arrivals area and overall passenger experience. Given the anticipated influx of a million visitors, as forecasted by the Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, he asserted the importance of ensuring that Fiji Airports ranks among the best in the region and the entire Southern Hemisphere.
