Fiji has set a bold target to elevate its tech sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP to 10% by 2030, as revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica during the launch of the Women in Tech Fiji chapter in Suva. Currently, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector contributes approximately 4.14% to Fiji’s real GDP, showcasing significant growth potential.

Kamikamica highlighted the global growth of the ICT sector, which expands at a rate twice that of other industries and generates jobs at a remarkable pace. He emphasized that the ambitious target outlined in the National Digital Strategy hinges on collaboration among all stakeholders, with a strong focus on enhancing women’s participation in technology and STEM fields.

In a global context, women represent only about 31% of STEM researchers, and the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles can hinder innovation and economic advancement. Kamikamica pointed out that this disparity in gender representation poses a critical challenge to realizing the full potential of the tech sector.

To combat these gender disparities, the Fijian government aims to train 100,000 individuals in digital literacy over the next three years, with a total of 250,000 targeted within five years. This push includes revamping the Telecentre project to deliver digital technologies to previously unconnected communities and classrooms, ensuring no Fijians are left behind in the digital revolution.

The National Digital Strategy, recently launched, articulates a vision for a digitally empowered and cyber-resilient Fiji. The strategy not only focuses on economic empowerment but also emphasizes digital inclusion, striving to improve connectivity for underserved populations across the nation.

Fiji’s commitment to fostering an inclusive technology environment signals a bright future, offering hope that enhanced access to digital tools and opportunities will lead to greater social and economic advancements for all citizens, particularly women. Such initiatives could empower a new generation of female leaders in technology, positioning Fiji as a formidable player in the global digital landscape.

Engaging in international collaborations, such as the upcoming Women in Tech Global Summit in Osaka, further underscores Fiji’s commitment to gender equity in technology. This collaborative approach paves the way for innovation and progress, positioning this Pacific nation for transformative growth in the burgeoning digital economy.
