Fiji Aims to Exceed 1 Million Visitors: A Bold Tourism Strategy Unfolds!

Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka announced that Fiji welcomed over 640,274 visitors in the first eight months of this year. Speaking at the Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, he noted that visitor numbers for July and August have already exceeded the average monthly target of 90,000, positioning Fiji to possibly surpass its goal of attracting over 1 million visitors.

Gavoka expressed confidence that through ongoing efforts in marketing, expanding air connectivity, developing infrastructure, and fostering sustainable tourism practices, Fiji will reach its target. He highlighted that the government has established policies and frameworks to support the tourism goals. Historically, Fiji has not embraced an open skies policy due to the marginal air traffic in the South Pacific, with limited and lengthy routes.

He acknowledged the changes in the aviation sector and the global trend toward liberalizing air traffic rights. “The Government has taken a bold step to review Fiji’s Aviation Policy, now considering Open Skies on a case-by-case basis, advancing cautiously and guided by national interests,” Gavoka said.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that while the government aims to create a conducive environment for growth, collaboration with the private sector is essential for advancing the tourism industry. He concluded by stating that this is an opportunity for Fiji to showcase itself not only as a travel destination but also as a symbol of hope, sustainability, and resilience.
