Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, made a significant visit to the Telecommunication Authority of Fiji (TAF) today as part of his initiative to engage with critical stakeholders in his new role. During this visit, Minister Naivalurua emphasized the crucial importance of the telecommunications sector in fostering digitalization and promoting economic growth across Fiji. He pointed out that enhanced connectivity should yield tangible benefits for all Fijians.

The Minister expressed his dedication to collaborating closely with the TAF to tackle existing gaps within the sector and to enhance cooperative efforts. TAF Board Chair, David Iver, provided an informative briefing to the Minister on the regulator’s objectives, recent governance advancements since August 2023, and initiatives aimed at implementing the Universal Service Scheme, which aims to connect communities that currently lack adequate connectivity.

In addition to these discussions, they addressed critical topics such as improving financial management, staff recruitment, and the ambitious goal of increasing the telecommunications sector’s contribution to Fiji’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 4 percent to 10 percent by the year 2030, as outlined in the National Digital Strategy.

This proactive approach not only highlights the government’s commitment to digital inclusion but also paves the way for a future where all Fijians can enjoy the benefits of improved telecommunications and connectivity.
