Fiji Aims for Upset in OFC U16 Championship Final Against New Zealand

Fiji’s Under-16 football coach, Sunil Kumar, acknowledges the tough challenge his team will face against New Zealand in the OFC U16 Championship final on Sunday in Pape’ete, Tahiti. He recognizes New Zealand as the clear favorites but remains hopeful that Fiji can pull off an upset.

Kumar emphasized their ambition to make history at this tournament, noting that while Fiji has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, they have already achieved a significant milestone. However, their eyes are set on winning the championship.

“We have a dream ahead of us,” he stated. “As we prepare for the match, we aim to play freely and give our best effort. This is an incredible opportunity for the boys and the team.”

New Zealand, coached by Martin Bullock, enters the final as strong contenders after decisively defeating Fiji 7-1 in the group stage. The team has demonstrated its prowess by scoring 28 goals and allowing just one in their four matches.

Bullock reflected on their previous encounter with Fiji, acknowledging their recent victory, which sets them up as favorites. He noted the importance of applying their prior experience while also strategizing against Fiji, who will be preparing to counter their style of play.

“In any final, regardless of the level of competition, the goal is to win,” Bullock affirmed. “We are eager for the match ahead.”
