Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has announced that the country is progressing well toward its goal of attracting one million tourists by the end of the year. While addressing the South Pacific Tourism Organisation Workshop, Gavoka highlighted that from January to August, Fiji welcomed approximately 640,724 visitors, marking a 7 percent increase from the previous year.
He emphasized that these figures are more than mere statistics; they reflect the resilience and global appeal of Fiji as a premier travel destination. Gavoka stated the ambitious goal of reaching one million visitors by the end of 2024 comes with significant responsibilities.
The workshop aims to promote climate resilience and sustainable tourism practices. Gavoka urged the tourism industry to adopt innovative strategies to combat the impacts of climate change, emphasizing the workshop as a crucial space for developing effective solutions and strategies.
Representatives from various Pacific Island nations, including Tonga, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji, attended the workshop, which seeks to address challenges related to climate change. Fiji is leading the way by incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and Nature-Based Solutions into tourism initiatives to ensure environmental respect and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Key organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Department of Commerce, highlighted the importance of collaboration in protecting the islands and sustaining tourism. The workshop focuses on enhancing local capacity and cooperation for effective climate change adaptation in the Pacific Islands, promoting awareness and engagement in developing sustainable tourism standards.
Tourism is a vital part of Fiji’s economy, contributing approximately 40% to the GDP and supporting 119,000 jobs. The rise in visitor numbers presents a chance to improve marketing strategies and visitor experiences, furthering sustainable tourism that benefits both the environment and local communities.
This event underscores Fiji’s leadership in fostering climate resilience and environmental stewardship through tourism, turning challenges into opportunities and establishing a global standard for sustainable tourism.
