The Ministry of Agriculture has highlighted the increasing challenges that farmers face due to evolving market demands, pricing pressures, and fierce competition in both local and international arenas. Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the sensitivity of markets and the necessity for strong connections and responsiveness to achieve success.
Tunabuna pointed out that Fiji is now part of a global marketplace where local producers are pitted against not only other Pacific exporters but also significant agricultural producers from overseas. In response to this competitive landscape, the Ministry is focusing on enhancing product development and improving the preservation, marketing, and sales processes of local produce.
“Significant advancements in product development are being pursued. Our goal is to ensure that our goods not only compete effectively but also uphold the quality and freshness that our producers are known for. Additionally, we aim to highlight the unique flavors of our traditional agricultural products to carve out a niche in the global market,” Tunabuna stated.
As part of their strategy, the Ministry identifies producing goods that conform to stringent market standards as a major hurdle, while also emphasizing the importance of promoting Fiji’s traditional produce and expanding organic offerings internationally. “To keep up with technological advancements worldwide, we are eager to implement new technologies in our agricultural sector. By collaborating with organizations that can address our challenges, we aim to elevate our practices,” he added.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Agriculture intends to leverage new technologies and foster stronger partnerships to help farmers adapt to change, enhance value chains, decrease reliance on imports, support local supply for the tourism sector, and boost productivity across all agricultural sectors, including sugar. This proactive approach signifies hope and resilience in overcoming current challenges while enhancing the agricultural landscape of Fiji.
