The Fiji AFL men’s team is gearing up for fierce competition at the 2024 Pacific Cup, scheduled to take place on the Sunshine Coast in Australia from tomorrow until the 24th of this month. With a motivated squad and several weeks of intensive training, Fiji is focused on facing some of the best teams in the Pacific, notably strong contenders like Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand.
Team captain Isimeli Naqaravatu Qiolevu is optimistic about his team’s preparedness as they get ready for their first match against PNG, followed by a second game against New Zealand. “The training was alright, and the boys are really looking forward to it. Preparation was alright, and we put our focus on our first game against PNG,” Qiolevu stated.
In a sport where speed, discipline, and teamwork are essential, the Fiji team is dedicated to staying focused and unified on the field. Qiolevu emphasized the significance of camaraderie and trust among teammates, saying, “Just keep our heads up, have faith in God, and let God do the rest for us.”
The team consists mainly of young players, with most under the age of 29. Among them is an 18-year-old head boy from Marist Brothers High School, representing the potential and vitality of the squad.
