The Fiji AFL men’s team is filled with enthusiasm as they gear up for the upcoming 2024 Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia. Yesterday, in a ceremony held at Albert Park in Suva, the team was presented with their official jerseys and training gear. Saula Tuilevuka, vice-chair of AFL Fiji, expressed that this moment serves as a significant morale booster for the players as they prepare for the international event.
“These jerseys mean a lot to the boys,” Tuilevuka stated, emphasizing that the players come from diverse backgrounds, including many from villages and settlements. He noted that this opportunity allows AFL Fiji to play a crucial role in their development.
The team has dedicated the last seven weeks to daily training, mixing seasoned players with those who have progressed through AFL development pathways and newcomers eager to showcase their skills. Head coach Alipate Navuso highlighted the blend of talent within the squad, which includes eight experienced players who have represented Fiji in previous tournaments, nine players advancing from U14 to U17 levels, and eleven fresh faces looking to make an impact.
Although AFL remains a relatively minor sport in Fiji, the players have demonstrated commendable dedication. Many have been funding their travel and meals during training sessions, with families stepping up to provide essential support. Tuilevuka acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players’ families to enable their training focus.
