Excitement is building among the Fiji AFL men’s team as they gear up for the 2024 Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia. Recently, the team celebrated the presentation of their official jerseys and training gear during a ceremony at Albert Park in Suva. Saula Tuilevuka, vice-chair of AFL Fiji, described this moment as a significant “boost” for the players ahead of their international competition, emphasizing the importance of the jerseys to the team.
Tuilevuka noted that the players come from a variety of backgrounds, including many from villages and settlements, and highlighted the role of AFL Fiji in helping to shape their futures. The team has been diligently training every day for the past seven weeks, combining seasoned athletes with fresh talent. Head coach Alipate Navuso explained that their roster features eight experienced players who have previously represented Fiji, along with nine who have transitioned from U14 to U17 pathways and eleven newcomers ready to make an impact.
Although AFL is not a major sport in Fiji, the team’s commitment remains unwavering. Players have been funding their own travel and meals during training, with considerable support from their families. Tuilevuka expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by the players’ families, which have allowed them to concentrate on their preparation.
The Fiji AFL men’s team has set an ambitious goal to secure the Pacific Cup. Coach Navuso stated, “We’ve trained hard, and the commitment we’ve seen over the past seven weeks shows we’re ready to take on this challenge.” The Pacific Cup is scheduled to take place in Brisbane starting November 14.
This initiative not only prepares the team for competition but also represents the spirit of community and dedication that is vital to sports development in Fiji. As the team looks forward to the Pacific Cup, their journey exemplifies hard work, resilience, and the support of family and friends, providing hope for a bright future in Fiji’s AFL landscape.
