Excitement is mounting for the Fiji AFL men’s team as they gear up for the upcoming 2024 Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia. In a ceremony held yesterday at Albert Park in Suva, the team received their official jerseys and training attire, a moment Vice-Chair of AFL Fiji, Saula Tuilevuka, described as “a boost” for the players ahead of the international tournament.
“These jerseys mean a lot to the boys,” Tuilevuka shared, emphasizing the significance of this moment for the players who come from diverse backgrounds, including many from villages and settlements. He noted that this opportunity allows AFL Fiji to nurture their talents.
The team has been committed to daily training for the past seven weeks, blending the skills of seasoned players, those who have progressed through the AFL development pathways, and enthusiastic newcomers. Head coach Alipate Navuso highlighted the team’s blend of talent and dedication, featuring eight experienced players who have previously represented Fiji, nine players transitioning from U14 to U17 pathways, and eleven newcomers eagerly looking to make an impact.
Despite AFL being considered a minor sport in Fiji, the team’s dedication has been evident. Players have been financing their own travel and meals during training, with significant support from their families. “These boys’ families have been amazing. They’ve made sacrifices so their sons can focus on their training, and we appreciate that support,” said Tuilevuka.
With ambitious plans to bring home the Pacific Cup, Navuso expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, stating, “We’ve trained hard, and the commitment we’ve seen over the past seven weeks shows we’re ready to take on this challenge.”
The Pacific Cup will take place in Brisbane, Australia, beginning on November 14, and the team is determined to make a strong showing.
In summary, the Fiji AFL men’s team’s journey showcases resilience and community support as they prepare for a significant international event. Their commitment to each other and their sport reflects a hopeful outlook for the challenges ahead.
