The Seafarers Rugby Sevens Club recently traveled to Fiji for the prestigious 2024 Fijian Cup in November, creating lasting memories on their journey. The team, which included 24 players from Otago University, took the opportunity to visit the famed Sigatoka Sand Dunes, a key training location for Fiji’s national rugby teams.
Scott Wake, a second-year student studying physiology and pharmacology at the university, found the experience to be enlightening. He expressed excitement about the distinct style of rugby played in Fiji as opposed to New Zealand. The men’s team performed admirably, reaching the quarterfinals, while the women’s team advanced even further to the semifinals.
Men’s coach Scotty Opetaia highlighted the invaluable experiences the trip offered, noting it was a unique opportunity to play in the birthplace of the sport and engage with the local community. Meanwhile, Jekope Maiono, the women’s team coach and founder of the Seafarers, expressed pride in their players’ performance, especially considering their limited competitive exposure in Otago.
The players also immersed themselves in the vibrant Fijian culture during their stay in a village near Nadi, with Maiono describing it as a memorable experience that deeply affected the participants. He emphasized the trip’s dual purpose: inspiring the community while promoting educational opportunities at the University of Otago.
The team’s participation in the Fijian Cup was the result of two years of dedicated training and fundraising, showcasing their commitment to both rugby and cultural exchange.
