Fiji has advanced to the semifinals of the OFC Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-1 draw against New Caledonia in their final Group A match held in Papua New Guinea. This result allows the team, coached by Rob Sherman, to finish the group in second place with a total of five points, while New Caledonia topped the group with seven points.

Fiji started the match with optimism, hoping to secure the top position. Their captain, Roy Krishna, managed to score from the penalty spot in injury time during the first half after being fouled in a rough challenge. However, New Caledonia put up a strong fight in the second half, with Jean-Jacques Katrawa equalizing in the 59th minute, assisted by a skillful play from Abezeier Jeno.

In a thrilling final moment, Fiji’s Christopher Wasasala nearly clinched a late victory, but his header hit the post and was subsequently cleared by the New Caledonian defense.

The next stage of the tournament will be held in New Zealand next year, where Fiji is anticipated to face the host nation, igniting hope for a strong performance as they vie for a place in the World Cup.

This development is a positive sign for Fiji’s football aspirations and showcases their determination as they continue their campaign towards the global stage. Their journey thus far reflects their growth and potential in international football.
