The Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Hon. Esrom Immanuel, has addressed governance issues at the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) and outlined a proactive action plan for the future. This plan includes the review of electricity and other tariffs, aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in consumer pricing.

During his address, Hon. Immanuel confirmed that Mr. Cecil Browne will continue to serve as the Chairman of the FCCC, while Mr. Joel Abraham will step down from his position. Despite this change, the Minister highlighted Mr. Abraham’s continued importance to the Commission, as he will remain available to lend his expertise on tariff assessments and regulatory analysis as needed. This collaborative approach will allow Mr. Abraham to contribute to the Commission while also addressing other significant commitments.

The Minister noted that several service providers, including Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), have submitted applications for tariff reviews. In light of these submissions, Hon. Immanuel has instructed the FCCC to enhance stakeholder engagement and boost public awareness initiatives. By prioritizing communication and transparency, the Commission seeks to engage with the community in the decision-making process regarding tariffs.

A detailed report on the electricity tariff review is anticipated to be completed and submitted by Monday, December 29. Hon. Immanuel emphasized the importance of balancing the regulatory role with the necessity for integrity and transparency. He reaffirmed that all decisions regarding tariffs must carefully consider their impact on consumers while striving for fair and equitable outcomes for the citizens of Fiji. This proactive governance approach aims to strengthen the regulatory framework and foster a sustainable economic environment in the country.
