Fiji is taking decisive steps to enhance its Multi-Hazard Impact-Based Forecasting and Early Warning Systems, as highlighted at the Weather Ready Nation Workshop 2025. This event gathered various government agencies, development partners, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving disaster preparedness in response to the hazards and vulnerabilities affecting Fiji. Presentations by the Fiji Meteorological and Hydrological Service emphasized impact-based forecasting and warning criteria, complemented by the National Disaster Risk Management Office’s insights into national coordination and emergency response.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Deputy Secretary of Operations from the Ministry of Public Works and Rochelle Campbell, Coordinator for Weather Ready Nation Fiji. Both emphasized the vital role of timely and accurate warnings in facilitating informed and life-saving decisions.

This initiative is a continuation of Fiji’s robust efforts in disaster preparedness, building on previous workshops and collaborations that focus on strengthening forecasting and warning systems. The efforts have seen the involvement of international partners such as the U.S. National Weather Service and the Hydrologic Research Centre, ensuring that Fiji is better equipped to handle climate-driven disasters.

Fiji has also been proactive in integrating advanced systems like the Flash Flood Guidance System, reflecting its commitment to being a leader in regional disaster readiness. These developments align with global initiatives aimed at enhancing early warning systems, essential for community resilience in the face of climate change.

By focusing on a multi-faceted approach that includes technical advancements and community engagement, Fiji continues to pave the way for a sustainable and disaster-resilient future. This proactive stance not only aims to safeguard lives and livelihoods but also serves as a model for other Pacific nations.
