Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) has officially introduced its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services, a sophisticated treatment aimed at addressing chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch took place in Nadi, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad.
The Hyperbaric Chamber, which will be operational around the clock, is expected to hasten recovery and significantly lower the necessity for amputations—a growing issue in Fiji, particularly due to the high incidence of diabetes-related complications. Professor Prasad pointed out that non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, lead to a staggering one amputation every 12 hours in Fiji, indicating a pressing need for change in healthcare strategies.
“Launching HBOT is a crucial advancement in enhancing health outcomes and curbing the need for amputations,” emphasized Professor Prasad. This new service is projected not only to benefit Fijians but also to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, establishing Fiji as a leader in the region’s healthcare.
The advantages of HBOT treatment include reduced recovery times and better patient outcomes, which will contribute positively to the overall health of the populace. Professor Prasad remarked that the introduction of HBOT demonstrates Fiji’s dedication to advancing its healthcare infrastructure and could lead to collaborations with regional healthcare providers, further positioning Fiji as a preferred destination for medical tourism.
Additionally, the event announced the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which offers discount healthcare services to active cane growers, including reduced consultation fees. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that farmers have access to affordable healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
Professor Prasad also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Coalition Government to modernize healthcare infrastructure, with significant projects like a 100-bed super-specialty hospital funded by the Indian Government and upgrades to the CWM Hospital. “Healthcare is a key pillar of our development agenda, and we are committed to fostering a healthier future for all Fijians,” he added.
The launch of HBOT and the SCGF Loyalty Program further strengthens PSH’s position as an innovative leader in healthcare and underscores the government’s efforts to enhance healthcare access and support the wellbeing of all citizens in Fiji.
This initiative presents a hopeful future for healthcare in Fiji, suggesting not only the potential for improved health outcomes but also the fostering of regional partnerships and medical tourism, elevating the nation’s status in healthcare on a global scale.
