Fiji Advances Green Shipping Ambitions at Decarbonization Workshop

Fiji Ports Corporation Limited participated in an inaugural workshop focused on the Feasibility Assessment of Energy-Efficient Technologies for the Fiji Government Shipping Services (GSS) Fleet, held on October 3, 2025. The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport (MPWMST) organized the event, which received technical support from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) through the Regional Pacific NDC Hub.

This workshop convened key stakeholders from the maritime and energy sectors to explore innovative strategies aimed at decarbonizing Fiji’s maritime transport system. It included discussions on the consultant’s assessment approach, aligning outcomes with Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and transport sector strategies, identifying practical energy-efficient technologies for government vessels, and engaging stakeholders for comprehensive technical, policy, and financial insights.

The workshop’s initiatives are crucial for advancing Fiji’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions under its NDCs, with a target of a 40% reduction in domestic maritime shipping emissions by 2030. This goal is part of a broader national ambition to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Fiji Ports Corporation expressed that their involvement demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable maritime development, stating, “Together, we are charting a course toward a greener, low-carbon maritime future for Fiji and the Pacific.”

Mikaele Belena, Director of the Department of Energy, emphasized the environmental necessity of decarbonizing the maritime sector, noting that this initiative aligns with Fiji’s co-leadership of the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership (PBSP) alongside the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This partnership aims to strengthen Pacific advocacy for low-carbon shipping.

Belena also highlighted the collaborative development of Fiji’s Sustainable Maritime Transport Roadmap with GGGI, supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea. These concerted efforts establish a coherent framework for driving transformation domestically while also influencing global change.

Norbert Maass, the GGGI Country Representative for Fiji, Kiribati, and Tuvalu, remarked that the project exemplifies the green growth potential within the Pacific region. He stressed that maritime sector decarbonization represents an investment that will improve Fiji’s energy security, reduce operational costs, and bolster resilience against future challenges.

The overarching sentiment at the workshop indicates a proactive and hopeful approach towards embracing sustainable practices within Fiji’s maritime sector. This commitment not only reflects Fiji’s leadership in climate action within the Pacific but also suggests that through international collaboration and innovative solutions, the region can strive towards a cleaner and more resilient future.
