Fiji is making significant strides in promoting inclusion for individuals living with disabilities, although advocates believe that more awareness and action are necessary across all levels of society. Setareki Macanawai, President of the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation, emphasized this sentiment during a national celebration in Labasa, reflecting on the year’s theme: “There is ability in every disability.”
Macanawai articulated a powerful message, stating, “You are able because of the God-given gifts and potential that you have. Disability does not define us. Disability need not limit us. Our disability is not our identity. I’ve proven that, so can you.” He underscored the importance of collective action for achieving disability inclusion, stressing that it requires efforts from not just one individual or organization but a collaborative approach from all sectors.
Ana Tuiova, President of the Fiji Council of Special Educators, shared insights into how children are gaining confidence and experiencing social inclusion. She noted, “We are not only providing awareness but also showcasing abilities, skills, and talents, paving the way for independent living and future careers.” This sentiment was showcased during an awareness march through Labasa Town, where schools displayed their programs, illustrating the diverse skill sets of their students.
The celebration coincided with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, focusing on creating disability-inclusive societies to foster social progress. Hundreds of students, educators, and disability advocates participated in the event, proudly showcasing the talents of children as Fiji moves towards a more inclusive and empowered society.
The ongoing commitment to promoting awareness and enhancing the lives of those with disabilities represents a hopeful step towards creating a brighter future where everyone’s abilities are recognized and valued.
